How to contribute

How to fix, improve or add to the handbook.

Anyone at AltLabs can propose a change to the handbook. Every change goes through a pull request, so nothing is published without a second pair of eyes.

Small fixes: edit on GitHub

For typos, broken links or a sentence that needs updating:

  1. At the top of the page, choose Open → Open in GitHub.
  2. Click the pencil icon and make your change in GitHub's editor.
  3. Choose Create a new branch and start a pull request, then describe what you changed and why.

Bigger changes: work locally

For new pages, restructuring, or anything you want to preview first:

git clone https://github.com/altlabsagency/handbook.git
cd handbook
npm install
npm run dev

Then open http://localhost:3000/docs. Pages reload as you edit.

Where things live

WhatWhere
Pagescontent/docs/<section>/<page>.mdx
Page order and section namesmeta.json in each section folder
Home section (about, this page, changelog)content/docs/(home)/

Adding a page

  1. Create an .mdx file in the right section folder. The file name becomes the URL, so use lowercase words separated by hyphens.

  2. Add frontmatter with a title and a one-sentence description:

    ---
    title: Pull requests
    description: How we open, size and describe pull requests.
    ---
  3. Add the file name (without .mdx) to the pages list in that folder's meta.json, where you want it to appear in the sidebar. Pages not listed in meta.json won't show in the sidebar.

  4. Write the content. Don't repeat the title as a heading; it's rendered from the frontmatter. Start with ## headings.

Writing a placeholder page

When you fill in a placeholder, remove the Placeholder callout once the page has real content.

Components you can use

Pages are MDX, so as well as Markdown you can use these components:

<Callout type="warn" title="Heads up">Something to be careful of.</Callout>

<Cards>
  <Card title="Pull requests" href="/docs/development-workflow/pull-requests">
    How we open and describe pull requests.
  </Card>
</Cards>

Callout types are info, warn, error, success and idea. See the Fumadocs Markdown guide for everything else.

Opening a pull request

  1. Before pushing, run npm run build to check the site still builds.
  2. Open a pull request against main. An automated check builds the site, so broken pages are caught before merge.
  3. Once it's approved and merged, the site redeploys automatically within a few minutes.
  4. For anything beyond a small fix, add a line to the changelog.

Style

  • Write in plain British English, in the second person ("you") where it helps.
  • Explain why as well as what. The reasoning matters as much as the rule.
  • Keep pages focused. If a page covers two topics, split it.
  • Link to other handbook pages rather than repeating them.
  • More guidance will be added in Documentation standards.
